Care is a huge industry. With denominations ranging from Older People Care to Dementia Care – the sector needs a lot of different people with a lot of different skills. Having experience in Care isn’t an indicator that you’ll be an amazing carer. Your transferable skills can make all the difference.
You might be surprised by how many skills you already have that are invaluable in a career in Care. Like so many other industries – Care needs people who are team-players, but can also work on their own. It needs people who are very safety conscious, and communicate well. Just because you have no experience of Care, it doesn’t mean you won’t make an amazing carer.
What transferable skills might I have?
As with most career changes – if you’ve worked in similar industries before, you may find it easier. However, no matter where you come from – you’re likely to have skills that translate into amazing Care.

Working in retail requires a lot of different skills, most of which are transferable to Care. The retail industry requires you to be very person-oriented, and have fantastic customer service skills. On the other hand – so does Care. If you’re coming from a background in retail, you could find yourself able to make a real impact in any role in Care.
Oil & Gas
Working in oil and gas has a lot in common with Care. Both can have high pressure workplaces, where health and safety is of the utmost importance. Aswell, if you have any management skills – these are entirely transferable to Care, and can help you to find a more senior role.
